Planning ahead is essential

To help protect Bruny Island’s water supply, we introduced a daily limit at the Adventure Bay Water Filling Station on 30 September 2025.

On busy days, high demand has been placing pressure on the station. On quieter days, the water sits unused. This new cap will help manage supply and demand.

Bruny Island currently has two water cartersthey’ll need your help to manage orders and deliveries efficiently.

What this means for water supply

  • Once the daily limit is reached, the station will switch off for the rest of the day.
  • Water will be available again the next morning.
  • Plan ahead with your water orders to avoid disruptions and don’t leave it until its urgent.
  • Late orders may be costly or delayed if water must be sourced from Electrona.

Alternate water supply arrangements

To maintain a reliable water supply for the Bruny Island community, we are arranging for treated water to be carted to the local reservoir starting 3 November 2025. This proactive measure will ensure continued supply of this important resource.

We remain committed to ensuring supply for Bruny Island and carting water is a precautionary step to ensure the safety and reliability of the local water supply.

Customers may notice a slight change in the taste or odour of the water due to the change to an alternative water source. We have consulted with the Department of Health who support this approach.

Water carters can access an alternative supply at the Electrona Water Filling Station.

Interim water treatment solution

TasWater is exploring longer-term solutions to support Bruny’s water needs. We’ll be working closely with the community as this work continues. For further information, please click on the Water Supply Update at the top of this page.

Thank you for helping us look after Bruny’s water, together.

Water Supply Update

TasWater is committed to ensuring the Bruny Island community has access to a safe and reliable water supply and has been working on finalising the design and approvals for a new treatment system to be installed at the Adventure Bay Fill Station.

This interim water treatment solution will allow us to restore water production to the island, while protecting the groundwater resource and maintaining public health outcomes.

The installation of an electrochlorination system and dual filtration system will allow for the effective treatment and production of safe drinking water.

The electrochlorination system avoids the need to dose the water with chlorine, while reducing the risk of treatment by-products, such as chlorate, which posed the risk to water quality that resulted in the precautionary shut down of this water source.

The dual filtration system is designed to remove any particles and dissolved substances from the raw water to allow for effective treatment.

Installation of this water treatment system will include:

  • Adding further storage capacity at the Adventure Bay Fill Station, with two new 22kL tanks, each approximately four metres in diameter
  • New equipment housed in two shipping containers (one 10 foot and one 20 foot in size).

This new infrastructure will be located on the rear side of the Community Hall, in front of the current reservoir, to help minimise any visual impacts to nearby residents and the local Bowls Club.

What do you need to know?

To allow us to cease water carting as soon as possible, civil works will be commencing from Tuesday, 10 March 2026 for a period of up to three weeks.

TasWater is committed to minimising disruptions to the local community, however, you may notice some temporary work impacts, including:

  • Some trenching and laying of pipework, with an excavator and vacuum truck onsite for approximately five to six days during active construction.
  • Works will be undertaken between the hours of 7.00am – 5.00pm daily with some minor noise disruption during this time.
  • Truck movements in and out of site will be managed using a spotter to ensure public safety.
  • Following commissioning, a trial and monitoring of water quality will take place from April 2026.

What happens next?

TasWater will provide residents and the local community with a project update once we have completed installation of this new water treatment system.
