We’re upgrading the sewer network along Arthur Street, Launceston, to improve service reliability.
This project is part of our commitment to maintaining essential infrastructure and delivering reliable water and sewer services to support the needs of our growing community.
What’s happening?
We’ll be renewing the existing section of sewer main along Arthur Street, Launceston, with the work expected to be carried out over six weeks, weather permitting.
Approximately 62 metres of the existing sewer main will be replaced along Arthur Street, between the intersection of Welman Street and My Street, as part of this project.
There will be changes to traffic movements and detours in place in the local area to facilitate the construction works for the duration of this project.
Why is this work needed?
A recent road issue revealed movement in old sewer pipes beneath the surface. This section has been deteriorating over time and requires repair to prevent potential leaks.
What to expect during these works?
TasWater is committed to minimising disruptions to the local community, but you will notice some temporary impacts during construction, including:
- Increased vehicle movements, including heavy machinery.
- General construction noise
- Some on-street parking will be reduced.
- Temporary changes to traffic conditions and access, and some local road closures.
Traffic Management will be in place, and we will keep the community informed before and during major works to minimise impacts to residents and businesses.
Important Traffic Changes
These works will take place along Arthur Street, Launceston, between the intersection of Welman Street and My Street.
There will be a traffic detour in place to bypass this section of Arthur Street with an alternative route and detour via High Street, along Ann Street, Canning Street, and George Street.
Stage 1 – Approximately 10 days duration:
- Traffic on Arthur Street is reduced to one lane heading uphill in an easterly direction (same side of the road as My Street).
- Traffic on Arthur Street downhill (in the lane opposite to My Street) is closed.
- Closure of Welman Street near Elizabeth Street, so construction work at the Arthur Street / Welman Street intersection can take place.
- Access to this section of Welman Street will be via Canning Street.
Stage 2 – Approximately 21 days duration:
- Traffic on Arthur Street is still reduced to one lane heading uphill in an easterly direction (same side of the road as My Street).
- Traffic on Arthur Street downhill (in the lane opposite to My Street) is closed.
- Welman Street reopened to traffic.
- Construction work involving trenching and the replacement of sewer pipeline and residential connections.
Stages 3 & 4 – Approximately 14 days duration:
- Traffic on Arthur Street (in the lane on the My Street side) is closed.
- Traffic on Arthur Street (in the lane opposite to My Street) heading uphill in an easterly direction is open with traffic controllers guiding vehicle flow.
- This will accommodate new service line connections for properties on the northern side to the new sewer main and work on the northern side of the Welman Street intersection.
- No works planned from Thursday, 18 December 2025, until early January 2026. The area will be reinstated with the road sealed and open to all traffic on Arthur Street during this time.
We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we complete this essential upgrade of the Arthur Street section of the sewer network.
While there may be some short-term inconvenience, this work will bring long-term benefits for the City of Launceston.
