A new 885-metre pipeline across Spring Bay

The current subsea pipeline that carries water between Orford and Triabunna across Spring Bay has experienced several recent failures due to corrosion of the underwater anchors. These failures have made the pipe vulnerable to movement from tides and currents, leading to breaks in the pipe joints.

Because the pipeline sits on the seabed, it’s difficult to access and repair, often requiring professional divers and leading to longer-than-usual outages. If another break occurs during peak periods, limited availability of specialist contractors may impact TasWater’s ability to maintain water supply to some customers.

To fix this, we’re planning to install a new 885-metre pipeline, complete with concrete anchors every 10 metres along the seabed. This upgrade will help protect the pipe from movement and ensure a more reliable, long-term supply of quality water for the region. The pipeline will connect into the existing water network at both shores through excavated trenches.

Works

What to expect during the works

You might see increased activity on the shoreline in Orford and Triabunna where the pipeline enters the water, including some trenching works and construction equipment. There will also be more vessel movements on the water while the pipeline is being installed.

We’ll do our best to keep disruptions to a minimum and keep the community informed every step of the way.
