What’s this project all about?
The existing Smithton Sewage Pump Station (SPS) (also known as Davis Street SPS) is the main pump station in Smithton and it receives flow from seven other pump stations in the town.
It serves approximately 78% of the township as well as the McCain vegetable processing plant, Greenham Abattoir, and the Tasmania Diary processing plant. The Smithton SPS (Davis Street SPS) has a history of overflows into the adjacent Duck River with number of odour complaints from local residents.
The pump station transfers flows to the Smithton (or Pelican Point) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) via a large pipeline that also transfers flows from three other pump stations. The pump station consists of a single wet well with dual submersible pumps and a control building. An emergency generator is installed permanently onsite, although there is no dedicated emergency storage installed.
Several issues which pose a risk to the environment have been identified at the pump station and along the pipeline. A project is being delivered by the TasWater Capital Delivery Office to upgrade our infrastructure to improve environmental outcomes for Duck River and the surrounding area.
This project is part of TasWater’s commitment to investing in new and improved infrastructure projects across Tasmania.
The scope of the Smithton SPS Upgrade includes:
- A new sewage pump station on the existing Davis Street SPS site, including an emergency storage chamber capable of handling four hours of average dry weather flows.
- Construction and commissioning of a new Switch Room, housing the new switchboard and other electrical equipment.
- Design and Construction of new Odour Control Unit.
- Construction and commissioning six new maintenance holes and interconnecting gravity sewers for redirection of incoming wastewater to the new pump station.
- Renewal of 700m sewer pipeline.
- Decommissioning of the existing pump station and rehabilitation of site.
