TasWater Lagoon Desludging Program

What we’re doing

TasWater is undertaking a statewide program to remove and reuse accumulated sludge from our wastewater treatment lagoons.
This routine maintenance work ensures our treatment plants continue to operate efficiently, maintain water quality, and protect Tasmania’s environment.

Over time, sludge naturally builds up in lagoons as part of the wastewater treatment process. Removing it helps maintain the plant’s performance and extend the life of critical infrastructure.

Why we’re doing this

Regular desludging:

  • Improves the quality of treated water released to the environment
  • Reduces the risk of odour and overflow
  • Supports sustainable reuse of biosolids on local farmland
  • Keeps TasWater’s treatment systems running reliably and safely

This program is part of our ongoing commitment to improving Tasmania’s essential water and sewerage infrastructure for the long term.

What to Expect

During desludging activities, nearby residents may notice:

  • Temporary odours while lagoons are being dewatered
  • Increased truck or machinery movement near treatment plant sites
  • Signage advising of reduced water quality where lagoons discharge to creeks or rivers

We take steps to minimise these impacts wherever possible, including:

  • Using covered Geobags to contain odours and improve drying
  • Scheduling works during favourable weather conditions
  • Keeping work areas secure and contained
  • Notifying nearby residents of upcoming works

Community and Environmental Benefits

    • Ensures ongoing optimal performance of the treatment plant
    • Supports improved effluent quality and reduced long-term environmental impacts
    • Provides an opportunity for beneficial reuse, with a local farmer receiving the removed sludge

All removed material is tested and reused safely in line with EPA guidelines for beneficial reuse on farmland.
This process supports TasWater’s sustainability goals by recycling valuable organic material and reducing landfill waste.
