March 2026 Construction Update

16 March 2026

Ti Tree Bend

Major construction works on the new 10-megalitre covered storage facility at Ti Tree Bend are now more than 75 per cent complete. This important upgrade is a key part of the Tamar Estuary River Health Action Plan (TERHAP), helping improve water quality and protect the health of the Kanamaluka/Tamar Estuary.

The large 10-megalitre covered storage tank is now structurally complete, following final hydrostatic testing late in 2025 to ensure the infrastructure performs reliably once fully connected to the network.

Building the tank has been a significant undertaking. The structure includes more than 3,500 cubic metres of concrete and around 750 tonnes of reinforcing steel, creating a strong and long-lasting asset for the community. Recently, the final precast concrete panels were installed for the new electrical substation building, marking another major milestone for the project.

Crews are now nearing completion of the electrical, mechanical, and civil works needed to connect the tank into the existing sewer network.

Some of the assets in this part of the network are more than 140 years old, so upgrading the infrastructure has required careful planning and a methodical approach. Local contractors and businesses have played an important role in helping deliver these works.

Other TERHAP project updates

The project recently reached another important milestone, with the pipeline connecting the New Margaret Street Pump Station to the Ti Tree Bend tank now complete ahead of commissioning in 2026.

Work is continuing on several supporting components of the facility, including:

  • Installation of new pumps and stainless-steel pipework
  • Construction of access platforms to support ongoing operations and maintenance

Together, these works will help ensure the new storage facility operates safely and efficiently.

What’s next

Over the coming months, crews will continue completing the final mechanical and electrical installations.

  • April–May: Works will begin to reinstate surrounding parkland areas at Kings Park, near the New Margaret Street Pump Station.
  • May: The new 10-megalitre storage facility will be powered up in preparation for commissioning.
  • After June 2026: The tank is expected to be fully operational.

This project is an important step in improving wastewater management for Launceston and helping protect the health of the Kanamaluka / Tamar Estuary for the future.
