What is this project all about?
The Ulverstone Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) services the catchments of Ulverstone, Gawler and Penguin. The plant was constructed in 1983 and was designed to treat primarily domestic sewage.
Performance monitoring of the existing plant showed that the clarifier process had reached capacity. Process upgrades including a new clarifier, modernised pumps and a new sludge de-watering facility will bring long term benefits to the area through the improved efficiency of the plant.
TasWater has now successfully completed the major upgrade at the Ulverstone Sewage Treatment Plant, enhancing its performance, safety, and capacity for future growth.
The project, which commenced in March 2023, included the installation of a new clarifier, two biosolids dewatering units, upgraded flow metering, new pumps, and critical electrical system improvements. These upgrades ensure the plant operates more efficiently while delivering improved environmental outcomes for the local region.
Importantly, the improvements make the plant safer and easier for TasWater operators to manage, while also providing additional capacity to support population and industrial growth in the Ulverstone, Gawler, and Penguin communities.
The successful completion of this project highlights the collaborative effort between the TasWater Capital Delivery Office and TasWater Operations, with 14 local contractors engaged throughout construction.
This upgrade reinforces TasWater’s commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure that benefits both the community and the environment.
