What's this project all about?

Health Based Target (HBT) is a process that ensures world’s best practice safety mechanisms are included in any potable water supply system.

TasWater has applied the HBT methodology to all drinking water catchments. As a result, UV disinfection was identified as necessary to reduce water quality risks at a number of TasWater’s Water Treatment Plants.

Through this process, 19 water treatment plants were identified for inclusion in the project. The works were broken down into three stages to support effective planning, delivery, and commissioning.

Stage 1 of this project has seen UV Disinfection installed at the following sites:

  • Bracknell Water Treatment Plant
  • Bridport Water Treatment Plant
  • Deloraine Water Treatment Plant
  • Glen Huon Water Treatment Plant
  • Longford Water Treatment Plant
  • Scottsdale Water Treatment Plant
  • St Helens Water Treatment Plant
  • Westbury Water Treatment Plant
  • Smithton Water Treatment Plant

Stage 1 works were completed and sites commissioned in late 2022.

Stage 2B of the project is complete; UV Disinfection has been installed at the following sites:

  • Swansea Water Treatment Plant
  • Orford Water Treatment Plant
  • Campbell Town Water Treatment Plant
