Project Update - Upcoming Water Main Renewal Works in February 2025

23 January 2025

Kelly Street, Battery Point Water Main Renewal Project

New Water Main Works

As part of our commitment to improving water infrastructure across the state, we are installing a new water main along Kelly Street and a section of McGregor Street, Battery Point.

Key Information

  • What: Replacing the old cast iron water main with approximately 350 metres of new PVC water pipes.
  • When: Monday, 3 February 2025, to late April 2025 (weekdays only, 7:00 am – 5:00 pm). Occasional night works may be required, with advance notice provided.
  • Where:
    • Kelly Street: Between Hampden and McGregor streets.
    • McGregor Street: Between Kelly and South streets, Battery Point.
  • Why: The 100mm cast iron water main, installed in the early 1940s, has led to water quality concerns in recent years. Inspections and service testing have confirmed that the aging pipe is contributing to these issues.

What to Expect During Construction

  • Increased Construction Traffic: More workers and vehicles transporting pipes and materials to and from the site.
  • Water Main Installation: Excavators will dig trenches, and small cranes will lower pipes into place.
  • Traffic Impacts:
    • Temporary changes or loss of some on-street parking as works progress.
    • Narrow sections of Kelly and McGregor streets reduced to a single lane.
    • Minor temporary changes to driveway access, with advance notice provided.
    • Emergency access will be prioritised.
