31 January 2025 – Upcoming pipeline works along Lower Domain Road

31 January 2025

As part of the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project, we’re making progress on the construction of the new 4.3-kilometre sewer pipeline between Macquarie Point and Selfs Point to support Hobart’s future growth and improve the health of the Derwent.

To prepare for future pipeline installation, we’ll soon begin laying out and welding sections of the new sewer pipeline, which will require some temporary traffic changes along the northern section of Lower Domain Road.

Key Information

  • What: Laying out and welding new sections of sewer pipeline, involving a short section of Lower Domain Road down to a single lane.
  • When: From Thursday 6 February to Friday 21 February 2025 (weekdays only) 7 am – 5 pm
  • Where: A 200-metre section of the northbound lane of the Lower Domain Road near the Domain Highway
  • Why: This pipeline will connect the new Macquarie Point Pump Station with the future upgraded Selfs Point Sewage Treatment Plant. Once the new facility is complete, it will:
    • Treat up to 25 megalitres of wastewater per day
    • Improve water quality in the Derwent River
    • Remove tonnes of nitrogen and phosphorus from the marine environment each year

What to Expect During Construction

  • Increased construction traffic: Along Lower Domain Road there will be trucks delivering new sections of pipe and cranes laying them on the ground.
  • Pipeline installation: Workers conducting non-open flame welding.
  • Traffic impacts: Single-lane traffic management will be in place during working hours. The lane will reopen after 5 pm each day and remain open on weekends.

Priority access will be given to emergency services and public transport operators
