Construction Update

10 September 2025

As part of building Hobart’s future sewer network, the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation is progressing well, with key milestones achieved across our major sites.

Selfs Point

  • The concrete base for the first digester tank is complete. This tank will safely process sewage sludge using natural bacteria, reducing waste and producing a reusable by-product. Work on the base of the second digester tank is underway, supporting future treatment capacity.
  • The general-purpose station has now been installed. This station recycles wastewater created during treatment by returning it to the inlet system for reprocessing, improving efficiency and outcomes for the Derwent.
  • The installation of potable water pipework, assembly of large overflow pipes, and placement of electrical conduits and pits to power the facility are ongoing.

Macquarie Point

  • The major excavation for the new underground pumping station is complete, with more than 10,000 tonnes of soil removed.
  • 30 ground anchors have been installed, securing the structure against ground pressure.

Sewer Pipeline

  • Over 1,600 metres of the new 4.3 km sewer pipeline have been laid.
  • Along Lower Domain Road, two of three sections are reopened to the public. Works are now underway between Government House and Carriage Drive.
  • From early October, the pipeline works will move across the Domain Highway, linking Queens Walk and progressing toward Bell Street and Cornelian Bay Oval. These works will involve a combination of partial and full closures. For more information, click here October 2025 Domain Highway and Queens Walk Closures

Cornelian Bay

  • The laydown area has been completed and installed with project hoarding.

Managing Construction Impacts

  • We are reducing noise with quieter alarms on our heavy machinery, and sound barriers, and monitoring are in place to reduce disturbance. Most works occur 7 am–6 pm, weekdays.
  • Dust is being controlled through soil watering, covered truckloads, crushed rock on haul roads, and enforced speed limits.
  • We have installed concrete headwalls and marine silt curtains to prevent sediment from entering the Derwent and protect the waterways.
