Project Update: Selfs Point Sewer Transformation
4 August 2025
Supporting Hobart’s growth and protecting the Derwent
The Selfs Point Sewer Transformation is one of our most important infrastructure projects underway in Tasmania. This upgrade will modernise Hobart’s wastewater network, supporting a growing population while helping to protect the health of the Derwent.
Once complete, the upgraded facility will be able to treat up to 25 megalitres of wastewater per day — creating capacity for an additional 30,000 homes over the next 30 years. Just as importantly, it will improve the quality of treated water released into the Derwent, contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
What’s happening at our sites
Over recent months, crews have made strong progress across the key construction sites for this project, including:
- Installing new treatment structures and equipment at Selfs Point
- Delivering upgrades to the Macquarie Point Pumping Station
- Progressing the construction of the new interconnecting sewer pipeline between the sites
Reducing construction impacts
We know that construction can be disruptive, especially for people living or working near our Selfs Point construction site. We’re doing everything we can to minimise impacts while safely delivering this essential upgrade.
Noise
Construction noise will vary depending on the activity. To manage this, we worked with acoustic engineers before major works began to understand local conditions and guide our mitigation plans. Our measures include:
- Quieter reversing alarms on vehicles and machinery
- Noise barriers where needed
- Ongoing noise monitoring at key locations
Most works occur between 7 am and 6 pm weekdays and 8 am to 1 pm Saturdays. At times, we may need to work outside these hours to meet milestones or ensure safety — and we’ll provide notice wherever possible.
Vibration
Major vibration-generating works, like trenching and drilling, are mostly complete at Selfs Point. Any remaining work is minimal and carefully monitored.
Protecting the Derwent
To help protect the river and surrounding marine environment, we’ve installed:
- A new concrete headwall at the foreshore
- Marine silt curtains in the bay to capture particles and prevent sediment runoff
These safeguards help protect water clarity and marine life during construction.
Air quality and dust control
We’ve put a range of measures in place to manage dust and protect local air quality:
- Watering exposed soils and haul roads
- Using crushed rock and rumble pads to limit mud and debris
- Covering truckloads and enforcing reduced speed limits on site
- Monitoring air quality around the site
