Construction Update

29 October 2024

In September, we were excited to finally begin work on the project. In this update, we share what’s going on now and what’s happening soon.

Recently, we completed approved vegetation removals and ground clearing and leveling works.

From Monday 28 October 2024, we began some noticeable construction activities to prepare the site for major construction works. These include:

Piling works

  • We’ve got a large piling rig on-site building the concrete piles that will support the future main structures of the new facility. This type of piling activity involves boring into the earth, and then pouring concrete to form the piles.
  • The piling works are planned to be completed by mid-2025.

Site earth impact compacting works

  • We’re now compacting the earth to form a solid base. This involves a machine doing ‘impact compacting’ on the cleared site to compact any hollow ground below the old landfill site. This machine has a 3-sided roller that is pulled by a tractor type vehicle. It’s used to make sure we make the existing landfill layers compact enough to hold the future structures.
  • This specific earth compacting work is planned to be completed by late November 2024. This will then be followed by further similar types of compacting works throughout the project.

New Pipeline

  • Between Tuesday 5 November and Monday 11 November 2024 we will be undertaking Geotech activities at various location of the future pipeline route.
  • Geotech involves site investigations to analyse the soil and rock, conditions through drilling, sampling using a combination of a small drill rig mounted on a truck and using a vacuum truck.
  • This activity will be carried out at different locations, including the Regatta Car Park, Tasman Highway, Lower Domain Road, Queens Walk and Selfs Point Road, to inform our final construction designs and construction program.
  • The project recently carried out some land clearing in an area between the Lower Domain Road and Domain Highway, in preparation of major works for the future pipeline’s installation program.
  • From Monday 28 October, 2024 for 2 weeks, we will continue to be active in this area to clear and level off some remaining sections of this area.
