Selfs Point Sewer Transformation - December 2024 Construction Update

6 December 2024

As we head into the festive season break, we continue to make good progress across the project.

At our Selfs Point site, we are conducting essential environmental works along the foreshore at New Town Bay, near our treatment plant

What’s happening?
We’re building a concrete headwall between the treatment plant fence and the foreshore. Additionally, a marine silt curtain has been installed in the bay adjacent to the work area.

Why are these works important?

  • Headwall construction: Part of the project’s scope includes upgrading the existing stormwater network. This headwall will reduce the amount of materials, dust, soil, and sediment entering the bay after rain events.
  • Marine silt curtains: These physical barriers capture sediment and silt particles, reducing turbidity (cloudiness) and maintaining water clarity to protect the marine environment. This is a key requirement of our Erosion and Sediment Control Plan.

When will this happen?

  • Week commencing 9 December 2024: Headwall construction begins and is expected to take about one week.
  • The marine silt curtain is already in place.

What can you expect?

  • Increased activity: You may notice workers, excavators, trench digging, and rock installation near the foreshore. These activities are not expected to generate loud noise.
  • Minimised disruption: The silt curtain has been positioned close to the foreshore to limit impacts on rowing and other water activities.

We thank the local community for their understanding as we complete these necessary works to protect the environment.

At our Macquarie Point site, we’ve now installed over 30 of the 124 concrete piles that will form the foundation for a future smaller state-of-the-art pump station.

Fesitive season shutdown

From Friday 20 December 2024 there will be no construction activities at our sites. Construction works will resume Monday 6 January 2025.
