Selfs Point Sewer Transformation – December 2025 Construction Update

5 December 2025

Welcome to our latest update on the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project. As 2025 comes to an end, we’re pleased to share the progress we’ve made on this major upgrade that will support a cleaner, healthier future for a growing Hobart.

A year of significant milestones

Across the project, more than 6,500 cubic metres of concrete have been poured. That’s enough to build the foundations for over 300 average-sized homes.

We’ve also used more than 2,500 tonnes of reinforcing steel, which, if laid end to end, would stretch from Hobart to Launceston and back again.

These efforts are helping us build modern, state-of-the-art treatment facilities that will be able to process up to 25 megalitres of wastewater each day, supporting Hobart’s growth while protecting the Derwent.

Macquarie Point progress

Construction of the new 10-metre-deep below-ground holding tank is progressing well. The excavation is now complete, with more than 10,000 tonnes of material removed from the site.

With 124 foundation piles installed, new internal pipes and pumps being fitted, and the concrete base poured, we’re now over 70 per cent complete on this major structure.

Once finished, the tank will hold the equivalent of nearly one and a half Olympic swimming pools of wastewater and will replace the existing Macquarie Point facility with a more modern, reliable system.

Progress on the new sewer pipeline

One of the most important achievements this year has been the construction of the new 4.3-kilometre sewer pipeline connecting Macquarie Point to the upgraded Selfs Point facilities.

We’re now more than halfway through building the full 4.3-kilometre pipeline. Key milestones include the completed sections along Lower Domain Road and the Domain Highway crossing.

Work is currently underway near the Regatta Grounds, with construction through the Regatta Grounds car park to begin early in 2026 as we move toward the Tasman Highway.

Outfall pipeline nearing completion

Work on the new emergency outfall pipeline between the Selfs Point treatment plant and the end of Gas Road is well underway.

When complete in early 2026, it will safely transfer treated any overflow wastewater into deeper offshore water. It’s one of the final steps in modernising the entire Selfs Point system for safer, more sustainable performance.

Cornelian Bay works

At Cornelian Bay Oval, crews have recently installed almost 300 metres of the next section of sewer pipeline. Backfilling is complete, with grass seeding to follow.

This section runs along the northern edge of the oval near the Brooker Highway before continuing toward the nearby housing complex.

We know this area is well used and valued, and our teams are working hard to minimise disruption while delivering this essential upgrade.

It’s been a productive year, and 2026 will bring us even closer to completing this vital upgrade for Hobart.
