Construction Update | November 2024

25 November 2024

Works are well underway at our Selfs Point site in New Town. We are making good progress to level the site for future major construction of the new facility.

Piling works

  • The large piling rig on-site has started building approximately 12,000 small concrete piles using a system known as Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) that will support the new facility's future main structures. This equates to around 80 kilometres of CMC piles put into the earth across the whole site.
  • Between Friday 6 December to Sunday 8 December 2024, we will be undertaking piling works to test for some out-of-hours piling activities near the rivulet side of the site to help inform our noise monitoring data for potential future out-of- hours works. This testing will undertaken for short periods during night hours,
  • The piling works across the site are planned to be completed by mid-2025.

Site earth impact compacting works

  • The impact compacting earth works are completed across the site. This activity, involving a machine with a 3-sided roller and other compacting rollers are used to compact any hollow ground below the old landfill site to form a solid base to support the future main facility structures. Other earthworks soil compaction is ongoing.
  • Most of the compacting works are planned to be completed during the first quarter of 2025.

New Pipeline

  • During November we completed Geotech investigations at various locations along the future pipeline route to analyse the soil and rock.
  • The project recently applied a soil binder solution onto exposed dirt areas along our recently excavated pipeline route between the Lower Domain Road and Domain Highway. This activity helps to bind the soil and provides an important form of dust suppression.

Gas Road laydown area

From Tuesday 26 November we will begin establishing a laydown area on some vacant land at the end of Gas Road, New Town. This will involve truck movements to and from the site, fencing, excavators, rollers, site levelling works and trucks removing vegetation materials and bringing new soil to site.

  • The laydown area will provide the project with a location to store long sections of pipeline associated with the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation project.
  • During establishment works there will be additional truck movements along Selfs Point and Gas Roads, but we do not expect delays or impacts to normal operations along these roads.
  • For public safety, this area near the laydown site will be fully closed to the public.
