What's this project all about?

The Launceston Sewer Transformation is a once-in-a-generation investment that will deliver lasting benefits for Launceston and its waterways.

The sewer network in Launceston has served the community well for more than 100 years however, it is now nearing capacity and posing risks to our waterways and the local environment. Over the next decade we will be delivering significant investments to ensure we meet modern environmental standards and provide the infrastructure capacity required for future development.

This transformative project will see ageing sewage treatment plants at Prospect Vale, Hoblers Bridge, Norwood, Riverside, Legana and Newham retired with flows redirected to an upgraded Ti Tree Bend Sewage Treatment Plant in Invermay.

Work has already started to improve the health of Kanamaluka/Tamar estuary, through our Combined System Improvements Program, delivered as part of the Tamar Estuary River Health Action Plan (TERHAP). The TERHAP projects, including the new sewer pipeline to transfer flows from an upgraded Margaret Street Sewage Pump Station and the construction of a 10 megalitre storage tank at Ti Tree Bend will significantly reduce the frequency and volume of overflow events into the Kanamaluka/Tamar estuary. The TERHAP projects lay the foundation for future upgrades which will be delivered through the Launceston Sewer Transformation.

The Launceston Sewer Transformation combines the following projects:

  • Prospect Vale Improvement - A new sewage pump station and pipeline will be constructed to redirect flows, once commissioned the old sewage treatment plant will be retired.
  • Ti Tree Bend Sewage Treatment Plant Improvement - a major upgrade will be delivered at Ti Tree Bend to increase capacity, catering for the redirected flows and to minimise impacts to the waterways and the environment.
  • Hoblers Bridge and Norwood Improvement - New sewage pump stations will be constructed to redirect flows, once commissioned the old sewage treatment plant will be retired.
  • Riverside, Legana, and Newnham Improvement - future sewage treatment plant consolidation and upgrades.

Preliminary works have commenced for the construction of the Prospect Vale Sewage Pump Station and new pipeline works. Over the coming months local residents will notice an increase of activity in and around the existing Prospect Vale Sewage Treatment Plant site and proposed pipeline routes.

Construction of the new storage tank at Ti Tree Bend is due for completion in mid-2026, when future upgrade works will start.

We understand that construction can impact the day-to-day life of residents and our aim is to minimise construction impacts as much as possible. Your feedback is important to us and as planning and work progresses, we want to hear from you. Your feedback, comments and questions help us stay connected with the communities we serve.

Together, we can protect Kanamaluka/Tamar estuary for generations to come.
