Overview

Protecting our waterways for the future - delivering improvements through the Launceston Sewer Transformation

The Launceston Sewer Transformation (LST) is one of the most significant sewer infrastructure improvements underway in northern Tasmania. It will modernise and consolidate ageing sewerage infrastructure, protect our environment, and accommodate future growth for the Launceston community.

The Prospect Vale Sewerage Improvement project is a key stage of this transformation. This project will help retire ageing infrastructure that is no longer meeting our environmental and service standards, redirecting wastewater to the existing Ti Tree Bend facility, and support a more reliable and resilient sewerage system across Launceston.

Tasmanians value and feel a strong connection to our local waterways. This project is about protecting these places, reducing environmental risks, and ensuring the community can enjoy them safely for generations to come.

By upgrading Prospect Vale’s sewage infrastructure, TasWater is investing in the local area, keeping services reliable, reducing environmental impact, and supporting growth across Prospect Vale and surrounding communities.

Why is this project needed?

The current Prospect Vale STP can no longer meet our environmental standards or accommodate projected community growth.

This project is part of the broader LST initiative that will replace seven ageing treatment plants with a modernised system centred around an upgraded Ti Tree Bend plant, delivering improved treatment, system resilience, capacity for future growth and environmental protection.

As part of this project, we are also installing a new treated water transfer main. This will help secure a reliable drinking water supply for parts of Launceston by improving the connection between Mt Leslie and the Upper Brougham reservoirs. Delivering this work alongside the sewer improvements reduces disruption and maximises long‑term community benefit.

We’re investing in Launceston’s future by improving the health of our waterways.

    • Improve environmental outcomes for local creeks and waterways.

  • Upgraded Infrastructure

We’re consolidating seven ageing treatment plants into one modern, upgraded facility at Ti Tree Bend.

    • Boosting service reliability for wastewater treatment across greater Launceston.

  • Improved Water Supply Reliability

We’re installing a new treated water transfer main from Mt Leslie to the Upper Brougham reservoirs to:

    • Strengthen water supply resilience for parts of Launceston

    • Support growing residential and commercial demand.

  • Generational Impact

This is a once-in-a-generation investment in Tasmania’s infrastructure and environment.

    • Unlocking capacity for future housing and development.

What’s happening?

These works are essential to provide long‑term sewer capacity and environmental safeguards for the growing Prospect Vale area. We are planning and preparing for works to:

  • Rationalise the Prospect Vale Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) by diverting sewage flows to the Ti Tree Bend STP. This includes constructing new sewer infrastructure and stopping onsite treatment and discharge at the existing Prospect Vale STP.
  • Build a new Prospect Vale Sewage Pump Station (SPS) and pipeline to link with the existing sewer network.
  • Construct storage facilities and odour management systems to reduce the risk of overflows and support environmental protection.
  • Install a new treated water transfer main from Mt Leslie to the Upper Brougham Reservoirs to improve water supply reliability for parts of Launceston. This work includes installing new pipeline sections, improving connections to existing reservoirs, and future‑proofing water delivery infrastructure. Completing this work alongside sewer upgrades minimises disruption to nearby communities.

What you can expect during construction

Work will be carefully planned to minimise disruption, but there may be short‑term impacts including:

  • Visual changes such as site fencing, machinery and material stockpiles.
  • Some vibration and dust during excavation and earthworks.
  • Increased construction vehicle movement as well as additional vehicle and construction-related noise.
  • Short-term, temporary closures to some public areas.
  • Changes to local traffic conditions including traffic management and a reduced speed limit. For your safety and ours, please follow all signage and directions from our crews.

TasWater works with contractors and local authorities to reduce impacts wherever possible and keep the community informed with updates during key stages.
