Construction Update

24 October 2025

Welcome to our latest update on the Selfs Point Sewer Transformation Project. Our teams continue to make steady progress across several key work areas as we build a stronger, more resilient sewer network for Hobart’s future.

Progress at Selfs Point

  • Concrete foundations for two new digester tanks are now complete.
  • Construction of the above-ground structures is underway and will continue over the coming months.
  • These tanks play a critical role in breaking down sewage sludge and increasing treatment capacity to support Hobart’s growing population.
  • Work has commenced on a new section of the outfall pipeline near the treatment plant.
  • The outfall pipeline carries treated wastewater safely offshore during major wet weather events, helping protect Hobart’s rivers, beaches, and marine environment.

Works through the Domain area

  • Crews have completed another major section of the 4.3-kilometre pipeline connecting Macquarie Point to Selfs Point.
  • Thanks to efficient coordination and long hours from our teams, the Domain Highway reopened six hours ahead of schedule on Sunday, 5 October.
  • Pipeline installation along Lower Domain Road is now complete, and the road reopened to the public on Wednesday, 22 October 2025.
  • Later in October, a short connecting section will be installed on Upper Domain Road, near the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
  • Temporary traffic changes will be in place during these works.

To date, more than one-third of the new pipeline is now installed, marking another key milestone in the project.

What’s next

  • In November, crews will begin the next stage of installation along Queens Walk, between Bell Street and Bellevue Parade.
  • The route will continue through Cornelian Bay Oval, starting near the Bell Street car park, following the northern edge beside the Brooker Highway, and finishing at the top of the oval.
  • In early 2026, installation will begin on the final section through to the Selfs Point Treatment Plant.

Once complete, the new pipeline will transfer the equivalent of nearly five Olympic-sized swimming pools of wastewater every day, supporting Hobart’s growth and improving environmental outcomes for the Derwent.
